Basic Income makes people unexploitable.

UBI makes people unexploitable. I grew up in a house with domestic violence. If my mother had a basic income, she could have better stood up for herself and made the right choices for her own safety.

Whether in the workplace or at home, too many people are too easily exploited because they have no financial security. Right now people are being taken advantage of, or are in danger, because they do not have the financial means to do what is best for them.

The current pandemic has only made this dynamic worse, as more and more people are forced into low- or no-income situations. Jobs are not coming back, businesses are rapidly automating, and we are entering a second wave of COVID-19 with only temporary supports from the government. 3 million Canadians will be worse off as they transition off CERB.

Imagine a society where this is no longer the case, where the money to have your basic needs met is guaranteed to everyone, where you can afford to say no to situations that aren't best for you, and where the choices and means to improve your life are provided to all.

Imagine a country where everyone can pursue their potential. We have never been closer to this possibility. When you ask your MP to support Recovery UBI, you send a clear message to the government that Canadians are no longer willing to wait. It's working: basic income now tops the policy priorities for the Liberal caucus at their upcoming convention. But now is not the time to ease up.
